My Valentine to You–A Song from Aviandria
I have always loved Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t all about getting chocolate or flowers. It wasn’t about what I got at all. It was about having fun figuring out what I could do for others. I probably spent way more time than necessary trying to match each Valentine card with each member of my class, and I looked forward all year to sneaking up to my friends’ front doors and placing a Valentine for them on the doorstep just before I rang the doorbell and ran to hide as fast as I could so I wouldn’t get caught. As I got older, it was a lot of fun to think of ways to make the day nice for my friends or roommates. Now, in honor of one of my favorite minor holidays, I want to do something for you. After much thought about what I could do, I have decided to try and share an Aviandrian love ballad.
Ambyrlae and Daryndelon is a very popular song in Aviandria even though the ending might be considered a little bit sad. It tells its own little story that I find rather charming. I have done my best to take the melody and put my own accompaniment to it on the piano. Please forgive the poor quality of the recording. I don’t have professional recording equipment. This is just to give you an idea so you can have the tune in your head as you read the words below. My suggestion would be to push play, then read the words along with the music.
Ambyrlae and Daryndelon
Ambyrlae was of the trees
Amidst the forest she did dwell.
She loved the earth that in things grew
The woods to her would secrets tell.
Daryndelon was of the sea
He lived upon the ocean’s waves.
The sea to him was paradise
with golden paths that sunlight paves.
Sea and earth, earth and sea
Together they can never be.
Though waves may rush upon the shore,
they cannot stay forever more.
Daryndelon had sailed to shore
and entered in the woods by chance
at the very time of day
that Ambyrlae would always dance.
Her graceful movements caught his gaze
as sunlight glistened in her hair.
Unknowingly she stole his heart
as he watched her dancing there.
Sea and earth, earth and sea
Together they can never be.
Though waves may rush upon the shore,
they cannot stay forever more.
When Daryndelon himself made known
Ambyrlae was at first afraid.
But hearing soft kind words he spoke
instead of running there she stayed.
Something drew her to his eyes.
The depth she saw there captured her.
She knew she could not be the same
as all but him began to blur.
Sea and earth, earth and sea
Together they can never be.
Though waves may rush upon the shore,
they cannot stay forever more.
When time to part he bid her come
and live with him on ocean’s deep,
but though she longed to follow him
within the woods she had to keep.
In love, they knew they could not part,
yet together they could never be.
For Ambyrlae was of the trees;
Daryndelon was of the sea.
Sea and earth, earth and sea
Together they can never be.
Though waves may rush upon the shore,
they cannot stay forever more.
