Food in Aviandria–Natural Yeast Bread
Last month, I mentioned how I love to consider what foods they would have in Aviandria and how they make those foods. Here is another one I have found that would very likely be an Aviandrian-type food.
Natural yeast bread is a lot like sourdough bread. It is basically made the same way–from a start you have to keep feeding and growing. The only real difference you would notice was that it doesn’t usually have the same sourdough tang. It tastes much more like normal bread. However, it is healthier than the bread you buy from the store, or the bread that you make using quick yeast or rapid rise yeast. It is the way people used to make bread for ages before the quick and easy yeast cakes or packets you buy at the store were created. Therefore, it makes sense that people in Aviandria would use something similar.
This kind of bread can be very simple, or somewhat complex. In our family, we like the simple recipe I used to make the bread in the picture above. The only four ingredients are flour, water, salt, and then a bit of natural yeast start (which is just basically the natural yeast in flour and water too). It doesn’t require any kneading, but it does require some foresight because it has to sit for about 12 hours before you bake it. That’s just how natural yeast is though, regardless of the recipe. My family can finish off a loaf of this in one sitting. It is super good with soups or stews, or just with butter and jam. You can add things to it, like garlic and cheese, or cinnamon and raisings, or hints of orange peel and cranberry. It is super versatile. If there truly is bread like this in Aviandria, I could be happy there for a long time.
Have you ever tried natural yeast bread? What would you like to eat it with?
