Ask the Author–How many projects do you have going on at once?
Spring is pretty much here now! Winter has been fighting tooth and nail to stay, but spring is starting to pull ahead, even if it may not seem like it some days. I’m so excited. Spring is my favorite. Anyhow, enough small talk about the weather. It’s time for another author question. This week (if for some reason you didn’t get it from the title) it is…
How many projects do you have going on at once?
This answer varies. Many experts would tell you to pick one project and see it through to completion before you start another. I don’t always follow this advice. Having projects I can switch between can help me combat writer’s block and keep my creativity flowing. Of course, I do have to be a bit careful. Usually, I’m pretty comfortable having a project I’m polishing, a project in the rewriting stage, and a project in the first draft stage, plus these posts, some emails, and stuff like that. I have had more at times. I’ve also had less. Right now don’t have very much I am actively working on. I have a couple of short stories I want to write, and I’m really wanting to get the last book of the Aviandrian Trilogy through the second draft before too long. However, this doesn’t mean my idea bank is drying up. I have a long list of potential projects I’d eventually like to get to. Among some of these are:
- Finish the book I started on Wattpad.
- A collection of Aviandrian folk tales/mythology type short stories
- Several other novels about Aviandrian people (I have at least three or four different ones swimming around in my head).
- An origin story about the keys of Aviandria.
- An epic fantasy series completely unrelated to Aviandria.
- A science fiction book I started years ago.
In other words, even though I’m not actively working on multiple projects, they are still developing in my head, and my brain is processing and working with them. I don’t think my well of ideas is going to run dry anytime soon. If I don’t work on more than one at once, I’ll die with untold stories still in my head, and that would be tragic indeed.
How many projects, writing or otherwise, can you have going on at once before it becomes too much?
