What Ashlynn Is and What She Isn’t

Hello, hello. It looks like I actually made it with a post this week. I wasn’t sure I would. Last week was crazy. Three of my family members had birthdays. Oh, and I got a haircut for the first time in forever. Not really forever, but it was starting to feel like it. The girl who cut it said she cut about fourteen inches off, and it’s still below my shoulders, though just barely.

Anyhow, back to the point of this post. The main character is an important element in any story. If the reader doesn’t like the main character, it’s kind of hard to like a story. Below I’ve compiled a list of things my main character, Ashlynn, is, and things she isn’t. Perhaps this will give potential readers a good idea as to whether they will like the story or not.

What Ashlynn is:

Reasonably good looking in a very normal way.

What Ashlynn is not:

The sexy, alluring, full-figured, tall woman with unrealistically perfect looks.

What Ashlynn is:

Courageous, strong, and determined.

What Ashlynn is not:

Hardened, tough, and dangerous.

What Ashlynn is:

Secure enough with who she is that she isn’t afraid to break social norms including participating in activities considered more masculine, yet very much a girl.

What Ashlynn isn’t:

A tomboy who wishes she could be a boy in everything but name.

What Ashlynn is:

Kind, usually optimistic, sometimes a bit naive, but has a good head on her shoulders and will work to learn what she doesn’t know.

What Ashlynn is not:

Airheaded, ditzy, and stupid-acting.

What Ashlynn is:

A person with normal ups and downs in her mood. She’s usually pretty positive but has her sad or grumpy moments as well.

What Ashlynn isn’t:

Always Moody and whiney.

What Ashlynn is:

A person who acts and takes control of her own future.

What Ashlynn is not:

A person who is acted upon and merely lets life carry her where circumstances lead.

What Ashlynn is:

A relatable character with strengths and weaknesses, hopes and dreams, ups and downs. A person who makes wise choices and stupid choices, and has bad hair days once in a while. In other words, a very normal person.

What Ashlynn is not:

A superhuman who can be looked up to, but whose level can never be obtained by anyone reading the book.

There you have it. Perhaps you lean more toward the type of character Ashlynn isn’t. In that case Gateway to Aviandria might not be your style. Then again, you might find yourself liking it anyhow. Either way, you may at least have an idea what to expect with this.

What kind of characters do you find yourself drawn toward? Do you like superhuman characters or more relatable characters?
