Fun With Books–Pivotal Event

Pick one pivotal event in your favorite novel. What would have happened if it had gone the opposite way it did?

For example, (spoiler alert) in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, if Harry would have decided not to go after Neville’s rememberall, he never would have been on the quidditch team, which means he never would have gotten his Nimbus 2000, which means he wouldn’t have planned a duel with Malfoy, which means he wouldn’t have discovered Fluffy, which means he wouldn’t have been so interested in what Fluffy was hiding, so he wouldn’t have looked into the sorcerer’s stone, and probably never would have tried to protect it. The book would have been very different.
