My Writer’s Bag–A Twist on an Aviandrian Tradition

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while or even if you have read any of the Aviandrian books, you may have heard of a rider’s bag. If you haven’t, here is a post I wrote about it to give you a general idea of what it is.

This is what’s in a rider’s bag, not a writer’s bag. Just in case you want to see it without reading the entire article.

So, I really like the idea of a rider’s bag. I always like being prepared for just about anything. However, in my life, there is very little chance of me needing most of the things in a rider’s bag. Instead, I’ve put my own twist on it. Instead of a “rider’s bag” I have a “writer’s bag”. Sometimes it is more put together than others, but here is everything I would love to have in my writer’s bag.

  • Notebooks. Always notebooks. I love, love, love, love notebooks. Probably composition notebooks. Lined notebooks fall apart too quickly.
  • Pencils. Lots of pencils. Mechanical pencils. I think better with mechanical pencils.
  • Paper. Just blank printer paper for sketching my characters or scenes for further inspiration.
  • Colored pencils. I only need a basic ten pack. I can do a lot with that.
  • Reference material. This could be a lot of different things, depending on the project I’m working on.
  • Snacks. Chocolate if I’m not trying to be healthy. Nuts and fruit stuff if I am.
  • Lined paper not in a notebook. Because some things are just random and won’t fit in with whatever is in my notebook and I just want a single page.
  • A clipboard. This is for the printer paper or the lined paper.
  • A folder. Maybe two. This is to keep all the loose paper in.
  • Scissors. Because I like to be prepared, even though they have nothing to do with writing.

And with that, I should be able to write just about anything just about anywhere. Now I just need to go somewhere and write.

What kind of bag (writer’s, dancer’s, artist’s, etc.) would you have, and what would you put in it?
